
Bozo author/historian to talk at library about his ‘Bozeum’
Tom Holbrook, author, researcher and historian of all things related to Bozo the Clown, will talk about his “Bozeum” during a program from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin.
Holbrook will discuss the history of the long-running Chicago children’s show featuring Bozo and will be displaying some of his Bozo collectibles, including costumes, rare film clips, photos and other memorabilia, according to a news release.
Holbrook and his Bozo collection were recently featured on an episode of “Collector’s Call” on MeTV. He is the author of two books about Bozo and has played the clown at a variety of events.

Elgin Community College hosting Apprenticeship Expo
Elgin Community College will host its second annual Apprenticeship Expo from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Nov. 21, in the University and Business Center in Building E, 1700 Spartan Drive.
The expo is free and open to the public, according to a news release. People seeking apprenticeships or employers interested in offering apprenticeship programs are encouraged to attend.
An information session will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. featuring testimonials from current apprentices and employers and a panel of representatives from the Illinois Department of Labor, Illinois Department of Employment Security, Northern Kane County Education for Employment Office and ECC’s Apprenticeship Program, the release said.
Topics covered will include an overview of ECC’s apprenticeship programs, how education partners prepare youth for apprenticeships and information on support available to businesses interested in starting an apprenticeship program.

The Nitz & Howe Experience coming to The Hemmens
Tickets are on sale for the 25th anniversary performance of The Nitz & Howe Experience at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, in the Theater in the Round on the lower level of The Hemmens Cultural Center at 45 Symphony Way in Elgin.
The act, featuring George Howe and Daryl Nitz, is one of the longest-running cabaret shows in the country, according to a news release. The show combines audience requests and participation with stand-up comedy. Nitz’s 30 vocal impressions include Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Carol Channing, Billie Holiday and Edith Bunker.
Nitz is an Elgin native who graduated from Larkin High School in 1982, attended Elgin Community College and began singing at Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Seigle Foundation awards $60,000 in grants to address food insecurity
The Seigle Foundation has awarded $60,000 in grants to the Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva, Food for Greater Elgin and, for the first time, Fox Valley Food for Health in Geneva.
Chris May, executive director of Fox Valley Food for Health, said the money will be used to educate youth about healthy eating and to serve free nutritious meals to people facing serious health issues. Sixty percent of the nonprofit’s clients live alone or have little or no support, a news release said.
Food for Greater Elgin is a pantry where people can choose the food items that best suit their families, according to the nonprofit’s website. Northern Illinois Food Bank works with food pantries and other organizations to serve neighbors in 13 counties by providing 250,000 meals per day, according to its website.
In addition to food and hunger issues, the Seigle Foundation focuses on the arts, education and housing.
