Federal immigration enforcement officers detained two people in University Park on Saturday, village police said.

University Park police said in a news release officers were alerted of Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity and made contact with ICE officers “to ascertain their intentions.”

“Two subjects had been taken into custody without incident. The ICE agents then left the area without incident,” police said.

The release follows notice that a Blue Island resident was detained by federal immigration enforcement officers near the Vermont Street Metra station last week. Blue Island officials said police assisted the family of the detained person by ensuring the safety of family members, helping them recover important documents from their vehicle and making sure the vehicle was not towed.

University Park police encouraged residents to remain calm and stated their intention to comply with Illinois state law that prevents law enforcement from assisting ICE or any federal agency with immigration investigations and enforcement.

“Conversely, law enforcement officers are prohibited from interfering in immigration related investigations and enforcement,” police said. “The University Park Police Department is committed to safeguarding the wellbeing of the citizens and guests of the village of University Park.”

University Park officials did not respond to requests for more information on Monday. Police encouraged anyone with information call them at 708-534-0911.
