Mount Baldy has always been a dune on the move, but now it’s getting human help in that regard, and will be closed until mid-June as a result.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and National Park Service are partnering in an effort to move about 40,000 cubic yards of sand encroaching on the parking lot and depositing it at Crescent Beach, the National Park Service announced.
That shifted sand will support beach nourishment efforts.
Not only has Mount Baldy swallowed some of the parking lot, but it has also threatened the restroom facility.
Indiana Dunes National Park Superintendent Jason Taylor had previously announced the decision to truck the sand from the site and said no natural habitat would be disturbed.
The park service encourages visitors to explore other beaches within the park during the closure.
Depositing the sand at Crescent Beach will mean occasional closures to accommodate the truck traffic there, the park service said.
