A 27-year-old Elgin man has died and a West Chicago woman has been charged following a fatal hit-and-run crash Wednesday night in St. Charles, according to the St. Charles Police Department.
At around 10:52 p.m. on Wednesday, the St. Charles police and fire departments were dispatched to the intersection of Country Club Road and North Fifth Avenue for a traffic crash, a news release from the police department said. At the time, it had been reported that an SUV and a motorcycle were involved in the crash, with a witness reporting that the driver of the SUV may have fled the scene, according to the release.
Upon arrival, police officers and firefighters located the injured motorcyclist and began to render treatment, the news release said. The man, 27, of Elgin, was then taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police ultimately located the SUV and driver — Morgan Mroz, 29, of West Chicago — nearby, the department said. Following further investigation into the crash, Mroz was arrested, the release said.
Mroz has been charged with reckless homicide, aggravated DUI for a crash causing death, possession of a controlled substance and failure to report a crash or death, the police department said, along with additional traffic citations.
She was then taken to the Kane County jail, the department said, and remains detained there as of Friday afternoon.
The St. Charles Police Department is encouraging anyone with additional information related to this incident to contact the department at 630-377-4435.
