A Buffalo Grove High School staff member was pronounced dead after being critically injured Tuesday in a car-pedestrian accident at the school campus, according to police.

Police said a car leaving the school parking lot on Dundee Road left the roadway and struck a pole, which hit the staff member.

The accident happened at around 3:20 p.m. on Monday. Buffalo Grove police were on the scene immediately, the department said, and provided aid until the injured staff member was taken to a local hospital in critical condition where he later died.

The person injured was a member of the school’s support staff, police said.

Buffalo Grove police declined to provide information about the car’s driver, citing the ongoing investigation.

Dundee Road remained closed for more than three hours as police conducted an investigation. The driver has been cooperating with police, the department said.

“This is a tragic incident, which has deeply impacted our high school community,” Buffalo Grove police Chief Brian Budds said. “Our thoughts are with the staff member, their loved ones and all those impacted during this difficult time.”

Buffalo Grove police and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team are investigating the accident.

High School District 214 said Buffalo Grove High School Principal Jeff Wardle has been updating families and staff about the situation via email.

“The situation is being managed in coordination with school and district leadership, with a focus on supporting those impacted and maintaining a safe learning environment,” District 214 spokesperson Lindsey Dombrowksi said.
