A man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a 57-year-old man who was critically injured during an altercation near a downtown Aurora church, police said.
Luis Miguel Garcia Vazquez, 31, of Aurora, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the incident, Aurora police said in a press release.
At approximately 9:33 a.m. June 3, Aurora police officers responded to Warehouse Church in the 300 block of East Galena Boulevard after receiving a report of an unresponsive individual on the property, the release said. Responding officers found a 57-year-old man suffering from severe head trauma, police said.
Aurora Fire Department paramedics transported the man to Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora, where he was later pronounced dead, officials said.
Detectives from the Aurora Police Department’s Investigations Division and evidence technicians responded to the scene and initiated an investigation, police said. The preliminary investigation indicates the man who died had been involved in a confrontation with an acquaintance on the evening of June 2, during which he sustained severe head injuries, the release said. Those injuries ultimately resulted in his death, according to police.
Through witness interviews and evidence gathered during the case, detectives identified Luis Miguel Garcia Vazquez as a suspect, the release said. Detectives later located Garcia Vazquez and took him into custody without incident, according to the release.
Garcia Vazquez is currently being held at the Kane County jail, officials said.
Police said the investigation of the incident remains active and ongoing. Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the Aurora Police Department Investigations Division at 630-256-5500, the release said.
