A man was killed Saturday when he crashed his truck into a pole after he fled an attempted traffic stop, Round Lake Beach police said.
The man, 39, crashed at the intersection of Illinois Route 83 and Rollins Road at about 8:44 p.m. Saturday, police said. The identity of the man has not been released.
Minutes before, the man fled an officer who was attempting to make a traffic stop on Cedar Lake Road, just south of Rollins.
The officer ended the attempt after following the man about five blocks, police said, and then lost sight as the vehicle drove away. The crash site was about a mile away from the point where the officer ended his pursuit, police said.
Another officer came upon the crash, and began to give aid to the critically injured driver. The man was brought to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The roadway was partially closed for more than three hours as authorities investigated. The Lake Country Major Crash Team is assisting the ongoing investigation.
