A Cook County judge on Thursday ordered detention for the man accused of killing a 63-year-old condo board president in Uptown earlier this week.
Jonathan Wilson, 38, allegedly violated a restraining order that barred him from going to the building in the 4800 block of North Clark Street late Monday. When he allegedly returned, he was confronted by the condo board president, prosecutors said in court Thursday.
Wilson shot the man in the chest and again in the back, prosecutors allege. The victim was pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, and remained unidentified as of Thursday.
After allegedly fleeing the scene, Wilson was confronted by responding CPD officers a few blocks away. He then allegedly pointed his gun at the officers, who opened fire, striking him several times.
Wilson remained hospitalized Thursday and did not appear during his first scheduled court appearance. His attorney told Cook County Judge Shauna Boliker that “his condition is quite critical” at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.
Wilson was charged with murder, three counts of aggravated assault of a police officer, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and felon in possession of a weapon, court records show. His next court date is scheduled for June 26.
The shooting unfolded about 8:22 p.m. in the 4800 block of North Clark Street in the Lincoln (20th) District when officers responded to a call of shots fired, according to a statement from CPD.
A “known male offender” shot and critically wounded a 63-year-old man after the two were in an argument, police said Tuesday.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not yet released the man’s identity, but residents told other local media that the victim was the president of the building’s condo association.
Court records indicate Wilson lived in the building, too.
Responding officers chased Wilson into the 1400 block of West Argyle Street, according to police. It was there that “the offender turned and raised his firearm in the direction of officers.” Three pursuing CPD officers then opened fire, striking Wilson in the right thigh, according to CPD records. A gun was recovered at the scene.
The three officers were taken to a local hospital for observation after the shooting. The Chicago police investigative response team and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability were notified. Thursday, a COPA spokesperson confirmed the shooting was captured on the officers’ body-worn cameras.
The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on routine administrative duty for at least 30 days.
Wilson was arrested at the same condo building on June 10 after a woman claimed he threw furniture from her condo into the street below, court records allege. Prosecutors said Thursday that Wilson has prior convictions for armed robbery and aggravated domestic battery.
In an application for an order of protection filed on June 11, the woman claimed he “has threatened to burn petitioner’s home down and kill her dog.” A Cook County judge approved the petition the same day, ordering Wilson to stay away from the building.
