Three men are facing felony charges following an armed robbery in Naperville last week, according to DuPage County court records and a news release from Naperville police.
Davyon Toney, 19, of the 500 block of Northgate Circle in Oswego, 19-year-old Jalen Green of the 700 block of Violet Circle in Naperville, and 19-year-old Tyrell Mays of the 2800 block of Troon Drive in Montgomery have been charged with two counts each of armed robbery with a firearm and one count each of mob action.
Additionally, Toney and Green are each charged with two counts of aggravated battery.
Police responded around 4 a.m. Thursday, June 18, to a report of an armed robbery near a Jewel-Osco at 1759 W. Ogden Ave., according to court records.
Upon arrival, officers learned that two female victims came to the area so one of them could fight Mays. The two women were dating each other but Mays had expressed romantic interest in one of the women, court records show.
Dismayed by the relationship, Mays allegedly discussed fighting one of the women during a FaceTime call and ordered the two women an Uber from Chicago to Naperville, records show. When they eventually arrived about 4 a.m., Mays began fighting one of the victims.
During the fight between Mays and the first woman, the second woman grabbed a backpack the first woman had dropped, which contained a firearm, reports said.
As soon as the second woman reached for the backpack, Toney and Green allegedly pushed her into a fence. Green also displayed a handgun, hit the second victim in the head with it and took the backpack from her, according to records.
Mays and Green then allegedly instructed both women to give over all of their possessions and searched them.
Following the incident, both women called 911. While speaking with police, Mays called one of them and asked if she wanted her Firearm Owner’s Identification Card back. He also said she could get her wallet back if she paid him $250, court records show.
Shortly after, police said they found Mays attempting to flee the area in an Uber and recovered the allegedly stolen gun. Police also searched Green’s residence in Naperville later that afternoon, resulting in the arrest of the two remaining suspects, records showed.
Police said they also recovered the handgun used during the incident as well as additional items allegedly stolen during the earlier encounter.
All three individuals are scheduled to appear in court on July 13, court records show. They have been denied pre-trial release.
“Violent crimes such as armed robbery have no place in our community,” Police Chief Jason Arres said in a statement. “These charges reflect the seriousness of the allegations and the commitment of the Naperville Police Department to aggressively investigate violent crimes, seek justice for victims, and hold those responsible accountable.”
