GARY MAN FACES UP TO 22 YEARS IN WOMAN’S SHOOTING DEATH
A Gary man faces up to 22 years for a woman’s shooting death as she was driving by the 5th Avenue McDonald’s in September 2024.
Tedric Guy, 21, pleaded guilty Friday to reckless homicide, a Level 5 felony, a gun enhancement and attempted battery with a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony.
If a judge accepts the deal, his sentencing is Aug. 14.
Authorities allege Guy was targeting three men in an orange Dodge Charger in the 5th Avenue McDonald’s drive-thru. Instead, he shot Kia Tidwell, 42, of Portage once in the head as she drove by.
APPEALS COURT CUTS TWO YEARS FROM SHOOTING SENTENCE
The Indiana Court of Appeals cut two years off a man’s sentence for shooting at his estranged wife and stepdaughter in Hobart.
Ariel Ginjuama, née Gomez, 45, was sentenced to a split 22-year term in December.
Hours before the shooting, his wife, Evelyn Ginjauma, was acquitted of stabbing his female business partner. Ariel testified for the prosecution.
In a 3-0 decision, Appeals Judge Leanna Weissmann ordered Lake Superior Judge Gina Jones to resentence him to a maximum 20-year sentence in the shooting as outlined in his plea agreement.
His earlier release date is in October 2034.
Arrested as a teen, he previously spent nearly two decades in prison after he was wrongfully convicted of murder in Chicago in a case handled by disgraced former Detective Reynaldo Guevara.
CHICAGO MAN FACES UP TO 3 YEARS IN MULTI-CAR GARY CRASH
A Chicago man faces up to three years in prison next week after pleading guilty to not having his 1-year-old son in a car seat when he caused a multi-vehicle crash in Gary.
Wayland Johnson, 33, admitted June 11 to neglect of a dependent, a Level 6 felony and criminal recklessness, a Class B misdemeanor. The plea deal is for his unrestrained child and for injuring a Volkswagen driver, left with a brain bleed, documents show.
If a judge accepts, his sentencing hearing is July 7.
Gary Police responded Oct. 11, 2023, to a reported accident near 3rd Avenue and Grand Boulevard in Gary’s Miller section.
Three cars were “severely” damaged — a 2023 Ford Edge with California plates, a grey 2015 Ford Taurus and a blue 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan, both with Indiana plates.
The Taurus driver said he was driving north on Grand Boulevard when the Edge crossed over the median and hit him head-on.
He said his son, 1, was in the back seat along with a male passenger who said neither he nor the child was strapped in. The child had a cut and swelling under his right eye.
The child’s mother, who was in the front passenger seat, was ejected and found lying on the asphalt, court records show. She had “severe” facial cuts and a fractured neck vertebra.
The Taurus’ driver had chest, back and knee pain, plus a cut on his left heel. The man in the backseat of Johnson’s car had back and chest pain.
The Volkswagen driver had scratches and brain bleeding.
GRIFFITH MAN GETS PROBATION FOR BAR PARKING LOT SHOOTING
A Griffith man was sentenced this month to two years’ probation for firing a shot in a bar parking lot.
Laterrion Hutton, 35, pleaded guilty and was sentenced June 18 for criminal recklessness, a Level 6 felony.
Crown Point Police responded at 2:24 a.m. Sept. 16, 2023, at Tooties Bar, 1910 N. Main St.
A witness told police someone fired a gun in the parking lot, but no one was hurt. The shooter took off in a Black Jeep with a woman who worked there.
