The Mundelein Police Department has identified an off-duty officer who was killed in a motorcycle crash in McHenry as Paul Viduya Jr.
The early morning Sunday accident was in the area of Charles J. Miller Parkway and McHenry Avenue, a statement from the department said. Viduya, 28, was the sole rider involved, and the crash is under investigation by the McHenry Police Department.
“Officer Viduya dedicated his life to serving and protecting the Mundelein community. His unexpected passing is a heartbreaking loss for his family, friends, fellow officers, and all who had the privilege of knowing him,” the department statement said.
The village of Mundelein had released a notice Sunday afternoon that an off-duty officer had died, but did not at the time identify Viduya.
Area police departments released statements expressing their condolences.
An earlier McHenry police release said emergency personnel responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash with injuries at about 1:16 a.m. Sunday.
A preliminary investigation determined that a green 2023 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle was going west on Charles J. Miller Parkway when it “left the roadway and ejected the rider.”
The motorcycle was found in the eastbound lanes of Charles J. Miller Parkway, and the rider was found in the center median. There were reportedly no witnesses to the crash, although a passing motorist stopped to call emergency services and flagged down a passing private ambulance company to assist.
Life-saving measures were attempted, but Viduya was pronounced dead at the scene by the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
The McHenry County Regional Crash Assistance Team responded to the crash scene to assist in the investigation, the release said. The team consists of police officers from the McHenry, Woodstock, Spring Grove, Harvard, Cary, Johnsburg, Lake in the Hills and Richmond police departments.
Charles J. Miller Parkway was closed for approximately four hours while the investigation was conducted. The crash remains under investigation.
