Firefighters responded to two separate fires at residences in Aurora on the Fourth of July, including one that left a home uninhabitable and displaced several residents, according to the Aurora Fire Department.

The first fire occurred in the 1600 block of Cumberland Road at around 6:23 p.m. on Saturday, according to a news release from the Aurora Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to reports of a house fire and discovered burning siding on a single-family home, the news release from the fire department said. Crews extinguished the fire, but additional hotspots were located on the neighboring home and a detached garage.

Firefighters prevented the fire from extending into either home, and both remained habitable, the department said. A total of 12 personnel — two engine companies, one truck company, one medic unit and one chief officer — responded to the scene.

The other fire occurred around 11:25 p.m. in the 2200 block of Highfield Lane, the fire department said.

Crews responded to reports of a garage fire at a two-story single-family home and, upon arrival, found the attached garage fully involved, with fire extending into the house and threatening nearby homes, according to the news release. The incident was upgraded to a second alarm.

Firefighters initiated a fire attack while conducting primary searches of the home, the release said, and the fire was contained to the garage and rear kitchen area, preventing further extension into the residence. A total of 24 personnel — including four engine companies, two truck companies, two medic units and two chief officers — ultimately responded to the scene, the release said.

The home was ultimately deemed uninhabitable, displacing five adults and one child, who are temporarily staying with family, according to the department.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported in either incident, per the fire department, and the causes of both fires remain under investigation by Aurora Fire Department fire investigators.
