Gardens of Beverly, Morgan Park on display July 12

Everything from koi ponds to traditional plantings and an urban farm complete with chickens will be on display during the Beverly Area Planning Association’s seventh annual Beverly-Morgan Park Garden Walk, set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 12.

Eight Beverly and Morgan Park gardens will be featured during the walk, which began as an idea during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to bring people together for an event that included social distancing.

The self-guided tours must start by 1 p.m. Gardens require some transportation. In addition to gardens, participants can experience tastings. No rain date is available.

Tickets cost $30 for current association members and $35 for others in advance at bapa.org/garden-walk or $5 more for those bought on that day at the Beverly Arts Center, 2407 W. 111th St. in Chicago, where visitors should check in, organizers said.

Oak Lawn police lieutenants complete management program

Two lieutenants in the Oak Lawn Police Department have graduated from Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety, completing a full-time, 10-week management program for public safety professionals known as the School of Police Staff & Command.

Nicholas Kumke and James Hunt completed the program, which took place in Plainfield, in May. They join about 22,000 law enforcement leaders who have graduated from the program since its start in 1983. They studied such things as employee relations, contemporary policing, organizational behavior, budgeting and resource allocation, media relations, human resources, leadership and management, and planning and policy development.

Students are tested via written examinations, presentations, projects and quizzes as well as a staff study research paper. Successful graduates may earn 6 units of undergraduate credit from Northwestern.

Glenwood Academy students conclude year with ceremony

More than 120 students at Glenwood Academy in Glenwood came together to observe the annual Flag Day celebration and to mark the conclusion of the 2025-26 school year, which saw 12 students graduating from the school.

The patriotic community celebration included a series of military-style drills and performances watched by families, teachers, administrators and residents. The private residential school, founded in 1887 by Robert Todd LIncoln, Abraham Lincoln’s son, “has long emphasized structure, citizenship, leadership, and character development for students coming from difficult circumstances,” according to a news release. It provides “life-changing solutions” to more than 150 students, ranging from 7 to 23 years old, and their families.

McCord Gallery seeks items for garage sale

Donations will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 13 to 18 for the annual garage sale at McCord Gallery & Cultural Center, 9602 W. Creek Road in Palos Park.

Items in usable condition may be donated except clothing and electronics. The public is welcome to the sale, which takes place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 23-25 at the gallery. All proceeds support the arts. To volunteer, call 708-671-0648 or email office@mccordgallery.org.

Area college students named Chisox Athletes by White Sox

The Chicago White Sox named 12 new Chisox Athletes from NCAA Division I student-athletes, and area residents were among them.

The group includes Gigi Navarrette, of Palos Heights, a Mother McCauley Liberal Arts High School graduate who plays volleyball for Northwestern University; John Nestor, of Chicago, a Marist High School alum who plays football at the University of Minnesota; Morez Johnson Jr., of Riverdale, a Thorntownship Township High School graduate who plays basketball at the University of Michigan and is a 20206 NBA draft prospect; and Nasi Bailey, of Park Forest, a Rich Township High School alum who is on the men’s wrestling team at the University of Iowa.

The program, in its fifth season, engages student-athletes in “organizationally supported community initiatives, content creation and brand-building opportunities,” per a news release. This year United Airlines joined as a presenting sponsor.

Shakespeare Under the Stars set at MVCC

Moraine Valley Community College will continue its tradition of hosting a free outdoor William Shakespeare play, and the 22nd season of Shakespeare Under the Stars features “Richard III” at 7 p.m. July 16 to 18 and at 5 p.m. July 19 on the Gateway, between buildings F and M on the main campus, 9000 W. College Parkway in Palos Hills.

The play features Richard, duke of Gloucester, who wants to ascend the throne at any cost and isn’t afraid to kill to do so. Area residents from throughout the Chicago area are cast in the show.

Attendees should bring their own chairs or blankets to sit on. They may bring food but alcohol and smoking are prohibited. Those who must smoke should do so inside their vehicle. If it rains or is extremely hot, the show will  be moved inside Building F. Details are at 708-974-5500.

Palos Heights revved up for classic car show

Car enthusiasts will converge on Palos Heights for the 23rd annual Palos Heights Classic Car Event, planned for 5 to 9 p.m. July 16 along Harlem Avenue in the city’s business district.

The show will include more than 600 classic cars, live music, local food and split-the-pot raffle. The fee to enter a vehicle is $15. Call 708-334-4848 or email carclassic@palosheightspd.org.

Midlothian plans Sunday garden walk

The Midlothian Beautification Committee hosts its 15th annual Garden Walk from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 12, rain or shine.

Tickets cost $10 per person and are sold at the Village Green gazebo, 147th Street and Springfield Avenue. Ticket buyers will receive a map to the homes. Details are at 708-710-8086.
