A Dolton officer shot at a suspect during a chase that began after police heard gunshots near Sibley Boulevard and Greenwood Road early Monday, police say.

No one is injured following the chase that started shortly after midnight Monday, a news release from Dolton police Chief Jeffrey Chapman said.

After hearing several gunshots and seeing people running and ducking for cover, police saw a person leave the area on a bicycle, and followed it until the person got off the bike and ran, according to the news release.

During the ensuing chase, police said the person turned around and pointed a weapon toward officers, leading one officer to begin shooting back.

Both the officer and the person police say pointed the weapon were taken to area hospitals as a precautionary measure, where they were treated and released. The news release says the person, who police would not name Tuesday, was taken into custody, and a weapon was recovered at the scene.

Charges are pending as the investigation continues, police said.
