Two men have been charged with murder in the killing and dismemberment of a Mundelein man who disappeared in November, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.
Following an eight-month investigation, authorities charged Mundelein-area residents Dmitry Bogatiryov, 52, of the 26600 block of Kenwood Court, and Damen Voranoff, 56, of the 26500 block of North Route 83, in the death of Ruslan Furman.
Furman, 51, of the 26500 block of North Route 83, was last seen in November. Police said they are continuing to search for his remains.
Bogatiryov and Voranoff are accused of beating Furman to death and then dismembering and disposing of his body. A Thursday news release did not disclose an alleged motive.
However, investigators said they learned that the victim had been an acquaintance of the two men and all three had been together at Bogatiryov’s residence around the time Furman was reported missing.
Investigators said they learned during their investigation that Bogatiryov’s living room had been newly painted and that hardwood floors had been freshly stained.
Police executed a search warrant at the residence and found blood spatters on drywall and the floor that were tested and determined to have come from Furman. A reciprocating saw taken from the house later tested positive for Furman’s blood, police said.
Detectives found a burn pile near Bogatiryov’s house that contained fragments of a couch that had been in the house. Security footage from a store showed the men purchasing muriatic acid and other suspicious items, police said.
Lake County prosecutors presented evidence Wednesday to a grand jury, which returned indictments for first-degree murder against the pair. Prosecutors said they will seek to have the men detained until trial. Both are already in custody on drug charges that authorities said are unrelated to the killing.
“This investigation reflects the dedication and persistence of our detectives, who never stopped working to find the truth and seek justice for Mr. Furman and his loved ones,” Sheriff John Idleburg said. “From the day he was reported missing, our investigators followed every lead, worked through every piece of evidence, and stayed focused on holding those responsible accountable.”
Authorities said they searched Diamond Lake in an effort to find Ruslan’s remains, but without success, and are continuing to follow leads in the case.
