Jack Eugene Bevington, 91, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 3, 2026, at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview, Illinois, surrounded by his family.

Born on August 9, 1934, in Anthony, Kansas, Jack was the youngest of eight children born to Glenn Day Bevington, Sr. and Mary Lazetta Schroeder Bevington. Growing up during the Great Depression and World War II shaped his lifelong appreciation for history, family, service, and community.

After graduating from Anthony High School, Jack worked briefly for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway before serving three years in the United States Marine Corps, including duty in occupied Japan. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from California State University, Los Angeles, married Teresa Delgadillo, and together they raised four children.

Jack spent more than 30 years with the educational textbook publisher Scott, Foresman and Company, where his career progressed from textbook sales to business systems analysis. Following his retirement from Scott, Foresman, he continued working as a business systems consultant. It was at Scott, Foresman that Jack met his beloved wife, Jennifer Lauer and they were married in 1987.

Jack believed that good communities—and good democracies—are built by ordinary people who choose to participate. He served for many years as President and trustee of the Barrington Woods Mutual Water Association and later on the Board of the Glenview History Center and the advisory commission that helped redevelop the former Glenview Naval Air Station into The Glen. Jack and Jenny were active in local politics, volunteered with the Democratic Party, and served as election judges. After moving to Covenant Living of Northbrook in 2008, Jack volunteered by reading books to fellow residents, often accompanied by slides and lively commentary.

Jack was an avid reader, lifelong learner, and dedicated family historian. Long before genealogy became commonplace, he devoted countless hours to preserving family stories, photographs, and records for future generations. His unfinished memoir reflects his belief that the lives of ordinary people are worth remembering.

He is survived by his children, Jennifer Delgadillo Bevington, Geoffrey Michael Bevington, Carolyn Maria Bevington, and Christopher Eugene Bevington; his children-in-law, Eric Seyfarth and Lisa Sallwasser; and his grandchildren, MacKenzie Margaret, Zoey Frances, and William Geoffrey.

He was preceded in death by his dearly loved wife, Jennifer Lauer Bevington; his former wife, Teresa Delgadillo Harrison; his infant son, Christopher Robert; his parents, Glenn Day Bevington, Sr. and Mary Lazetta Schroeder Bevington; and his siblings, Harold Seifert, Mary Neil, Elmer Bevington, Catherine Drosselmeyer, Glenn Day Bevington, Jr., Valeria Sample, and Don Bevington.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Covenant Living of Northbrook, 2625 Techny Road, Northbrook, Illinois, followed by a private burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jack and Jennifer Bevington Scholarship Fund through the Glenview-Northbrook Kiwanis Foundation, P.O. Box 2831, Glenview, IL 60025.

Jack believed history was preserved one story at a time. Through his military service, civic leadership, commitment to democracy, devotion to family history, and lifelong curiosity, he enriched the lives of those around him and left a legacy that will continue for generations.
