Durwin Day OBITUARY

Durwin Day was born in Chicago, Illinois, on January 30, 1952, to Margaret Mitchinson and Thomas H. Day. An only child, Durwin grew up with the values that would define his life: hard work, loyalty, kindness, and an unwavering devotion to family. He passed away peacefully on June 20, 2026.

Durwin is survived by his loving wife of more than 30 years, Linda; his three children, Derek, Darcy (Jonathan), and Hayley (John); and his five beloved grandchildren, Cade, Aden, Ace, Shepherd, and Coast.

Nothing made Durwin prouder than his family. He took great joy in watching his children build lives of their own and never missed an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments.

His son, Derek, graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Computer Science and made his home in the Des Moines, Iowa. Durwin admired Derek’s strong work ethic, intelligence, and dedication, which have made him a valued employee of the Iowa Farm Bureau.

His daughter, Darcy, graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in Finance. Her compassion and love for animals were a source of pride and joy to Durwin, evident in the lively household she created with her five boys, three dogs, two cats, and the countless rabbits she cared for around her neighborhood.

His daughter, Hayley, graduated from Houghton College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Through determination and talent, she built her own photography business and became a nationally recognized interiors photographer. Her work earned her a place on the Architectural Digest Top 100 Preferred Vendor List, an accomplishment that brought Durwin tremendous pride.

Durwin graduated from W.H. Taft High School in 1969 and went on to attend Northern Illinois University, where he earned degrees in Education and Computer Science. His first job was at Sealy Mattress in Rosemont, Illinois, when he was just 16 years old. From that day forward, he worked continuously, believing deeply in the value of showing up, working hard, and doing things the right way.

He spent 40 years with Health Care Service Corporation in Chicago, retiring in 2025. During his career, he worked alongside dedicated professionals from across the country to help develop standards for financial and healthcare electronic messaging. He valued the friendships, collaboration, and shared sense of purpose he found throughout his work.

While Durwin was proud of his professional accomplishments, he will be remembered most for the way he cared for others. He was the person who made sure everyone arrived safely, checked that reservations were made, offered help before it was requested, and quietly took care of details so those he loved never had to worry. His family knew they could always count on him.

He found joy in life’s simple pleasures: walking his dog Archie, sitting in the sunshine with a burger and a beer, spending time with family, and sharing stories around the table. No trip into Chicago felt complete without bringing home bags of Garrett Popcorn to share with the people he loved. He was dependable, thoughtful, and generous with his time. Above all else, he loved deeply.

In his later years, Durwin became more comfortable expressing that love in words, and his family will forever treasure hearing him say, “I love you.” They will also carry with them his encouragement, his wisdom, and the pride he took in the people they became.

Though he will be deeply missed, the love he gave, the lessons he taught, and the memories he created will remain with his family forever.

A life well lived. A man deeply loved. A father, husband, grandfather, and friend who will never be forgotten.
