Frederick Orval Flener OBITUARY
Dr. Frederick Flener, 85, of Park Ridge, IL, left this world on May 25, 2026, after suffering from a fall followed by a stroke while in Orange County, CA. Born on the Northside of Chicago to Julia Tessler on October 8, 1940, Fred was a lifelong Cubs fan. He attended the University of Illinois as an Evans Scholar where he met his first wife and mother of his children, Joen Gallentine. Fred was a Professor of Mathematics Education at Northeastern Illinois University for 33 years and wrote countless math contest problems for ICTM. Fred is survived by his wife of nearly 16 years, Patty (Gaede); his four children, JoEllen (Kevin Wiland), Shelley O’Brien (David), Katrina (Colin Arpe), and Karl (Maureen Lesak); and 15 grandkids. He was preceded in death by Joen, his first wife of 44 years. There will be a celebration of his life on July 5 at the Park Ridge Community Church with visitation at 1 pm, service at 2 pm, and a reception to follow. People in attendance are encouraged to wear Cubs or Illini attire. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Evans Scholars or PRCC.
