George P. Rumel, Sr., age 93, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2026. Born on December 5, 1932 in Chicago to Peter V. and Mary (Agnos) Rumel, George was the youngest of five children. He was preceded in death by his brothers William (Faye)Rumel, Chris (Beatrice) Rumel, and sisters Jane (Chris) Arvetis and Helen (Ed) Hutchinson. George was also a dear brother-in-law to Stanley (Betty) Shellstrom, Cora (Kevin) Farrell, Richard (Amelia) Shellstrom, and Bruce (Leatrice) Shellstrom. George was the beloved husband of Joan (nee Shellstrom) for 70 wonderful years. He was a loving father to Cynthia (Ronald)Luchtenburg, George (Kelly) Rumel, Jr., and Peter (Lynn) Rumel. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Sarah Luchtenburg, Jake (Sarah) Rumel, Hannah (Mike) Seskauskas, Jessica (Ken) Mirch, Julia (Janice) Luchtenburg Silva, Alyssa Rumel, Kate (TJ) Lunney and Meghan Rumel (Taylor Dominick). His great-grandchildren– Eloise Mirch, Kenny Mirch, Nora Rumel, Vander Rumel, Atlas Rumel and soon to be Baby Lunney- brought him endless happiness and smiles. George also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and dear friends whose lives were enriched by his gentle presence, kindness and passion for life. A graduate of Parker High School and Beloit College, George dedicated much of his career to teaching history, inspiring generations of students with his love of learning. Outside the classroom, he was a voracious reader, an avid Chicago sports (Cubs) fan, a decent poker player and a lifelong basketball player/coach/enthusiast. He and Joan created a cherished family haven in Fontana, Wisconsin that was enjoyed by all for over 45 years. “Pier Time” with family and friends became a source of countless treasured memories. Above all, George will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his quiet, steady manner and the life he built filled with love, loyalty and togetherness. A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, May 29 at 10:00, with a service to follow at 12:00 noon. Donnellan Funeral Home 10525 S. Western Avenue, Chicago. Interment private.
