MAUREEN GUZZO OBITUARY

Maureen Catherine Guzzo, nee Gietl, loved her life brimming with family, creativity, beauty, adventure, and whimsy. She is survived by the love of her life, Angelo Joseph Guzzo, children Maggy (Carolyn), Gabe, and Clare (Jason), and her grandkids – Angelo, Gemma, and Michael. She is also eternally and lovingly devoted to her Gietl and Guzzo sisters and brothers: Louie, Theresa, Mary Eleanor, Carolyn, Larry, Rae Ann, Virgie, Madonna, and Bernie … and all of her nieces and nephews, and their families. She will paint all of our faces forever. Born and raised in Springfield, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Angela (Hayes) Gietl. Maureen graduated from Sacred Heart-Griffen High School, Class of 1963. She then earned her B.A. in Fine Arts from Marycrest University, Class of 1967.

She and her husband Angelo raised their three children in Riverside, Illinois. She was an Arts Instructor and Educator for Chicago Public Schools, a lifelong member of the Art Institute of Chicago, an Olmsted Society of Riverside Friends of the Fourth Board Member, and a volunteer for BEDS Plus Family Transitional Shelter in LaGrange where she led arts classes. Maureen was a talented painter who generously gave her paintings away to the delight of their recipients. She spent countless hours with friends and family experiencing the myriad colors, lines, forms, media, emotions, ideas, stories, and reflections available within the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the many galleries throughout Chicago. She believed every great museum visit had two acts: soaking in the art and thoroughly investigating the gift shop. She also enjoyed live theater, taking advantage of the small and big stages in Chicago, including the Goodman, Steppenwolf, and Steep, among others. An avid reader, Maureen was a frequent user and supporter of the Riverside Public Library. In her retirement, Maureen enjoyed her homes in Naples, Florida, sharing many days there with Angelo, their kids, grandkids, and their pals, Lou and Carolyn. She and the crew loved to golf, swim, shop, and walk endlessly throughout Naples and Marco Island.

A memorial service is scheduled at St Mary Church, 105 Herrick Road, Riverside on Monday, July 27, 2026 with a Visitation 10:00 a.m. till time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Info at 708-447-2261 or www.moravecek.com
