Melvin H. Oros OBITUARY
Melvin H. Oros, 90, of Aurora, passed away on July 7, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on December 5, 1935, Mel was the youngest of 11 children born to Michael and Emma (Mihalka) Oros. Mel was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, George, John, Frank, Michael, and Leroy; his sisters, Emma and Mica; and two siblings who passed away in infancy.
A lifelong Aurora resident, Mel graduated from East Aurora High School in 1954. Soon after, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he began a nearly 39-year career with Northern Illinois Gas Company, retiring in 1995. After his professional retirement, he spent nearly 20 more years working at Kennicott Flowers and the Vaughan Athletic Center, where his warm smile and friendly personality made him a favorite among customers and colleagues alike.
For more than six decades, Mel was a faithful member of Holy Angels Church. He could also be found enjoying lively rounds of poker and gin rummy at the Phoenix Club, which brought him abundant laughter and camaraderie.
Mel loved the game of golf, and cherished the opportunity to have witnessed The Masters in Augusta in person. He was truly a die-hard Cubs and Bears fan. Few moments brought him greater happiness than attending the Bears victory in Super Bowl XX in New Orleans and, years later, witnessing his beloved Cubbies finally capture the World Series.
Mel was always willing to lend a helping hand to his friends and neighbors, yet his greatest joy was his family. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, father in-law, grandfather, and great grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Linda, his four sons: Mark (Jean), Michael (Ann), David (Denise), and Patrick “PJ” (Lisa); his grandchildren, Nicole (Colby) Haney, Alyssa Oros Woods (Colin), Tony (Jessica) Oros, Emily Oros, Leah Oros, Michael (Carrie) Firmature, Matthew (Veronica) Firmature, Austin Oros, Ryan Oros, and Matthew Oros; eight cherished great-grandchildren; his sister, Jean Poirel; his brother-in-law, Alan (Marge) Schuler; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 10, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Daleiden Mortuary (220 North Lake Street Aurora, IL 60506). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 11, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Angels Church in Aurora with Father Dean Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staffs at both Asbury Gardens and Divine Hospice for all their tireless care and concern for Melvin.
