MidCon Corp. said its second-quarter earnings were $61 million, or $2 a share, up more than 23 percent from $49 million, or $1.64 a share, in the year-earlier quarter.

Lombard-based MidCon cited its natural-gas transmission and marketing unit for the improved earnings. Oil and gas exploration and contract drilling operations also showed strong improvement from 1984, the company said.

In the six months ended March 31, MidCon`s earnings were $111 million, or $3.68 a share, up 24 percent from $90 million, or $3 a share, a year earlier.

While pleased with the second-quarter and six-month figures, O.C. Davis, chairman of the diversified energy and pipeline company, said, ”It will be difficult during the months ahead to match the dramatic increases experienced in the first half of fiscal 1985.”
