Just a year ago, I would have agreed with Joseph Scheidler`s ”pro-life” beliefs (”Man with a Mission,” Aug. 11). I am a Catholic, active in my church, and I respect all life that God has created.

However, no issue is as black and white as Mr. Scheidler indicates. No woman enjoys getting an abortion. It is the choice made when there is no other choice. Our society has made birth control too costly for the poor and taboo for the young, the groups that would benefit the most.

As a Catholic and former seminarian, surely Mr. Scheidler realizes that one of Jesus` greatest qualities was compassion. Jesus always showed compassion to the person before judging the sin. Mr. Scheidler has judged women and found us guilty. He does not hear the ”silent screams” of the teenager in love who went too far, the mother on welfare who has several children already, the working mother who cannot financially or emotionally support another child.

Mr. Scheidler`s militant ”pro-life” activities are inhumane, unfeeling and un-Christian. I find more caring and compassion in the ranks of the ”pro- choice” groups.
