”Am I going to school tomorrow?” asked the 2d-grader as she scooped a spoonful of rice onto her plate for her evening meal.

It doesn`t look like it, replied her parents, each glancing to see how the other was going to field the question.

”Gee, thats too bad,” said the 7-year-old regretfully.

In a tone indicating conviction that a postponed first day is the same as missing the first day forever, she said, ”The first day of school is always so much fun. There`s no homework yet, and the teacher doesn`t have to rush you. And the teacher is nice because she still likes you.”

The tone was more upbeat the next evening.

”Hey, Mom, I think there`s school tomorrow. They just said on television there will be a special report on the 10 o`clock news. They should have it at 8 o`clock so kids could know too.”
