Carmel High School in Mundelein ran its record to 6-0 as Steve Bruns, Jason Kelly and Bob Langer all contributed 2 hits and two runs-batted-in to spark a 12-3 victory over visiting Grant Thursday.
Pitcher Dan Halverson raised his record to 2-0, scattering six hits, fanning four and walking two in his six-inning stint in the nonconference game.
New Trier 8, Evanston 7–The Trevians (9-1 overall, 2-0 in the Central Suburban South) pushed across four runs in the fifth inning to rally from a 7-4 deficit. Tom Gladden drove in the go-ahead run with a single. Hanson Williams, pitching in relief, checked Evanston on four hits over the final 4 2/3 innings.
Prospect 9, Schaumburg 1–Eric Porter scattered three hits, struck out 11 and walked one to earn the 6-inning triumph and was supported by Ed Stryker
(2-for-4, 3 RBIs) and Troy Toman (2-for-2) in the Mid-Suburban South contest.
Glenbrook South 6, Waukegan East 2–Jay Margolis scattered seven hits and struck out five in 6 innings, Ted Ahr retired the side in the seventh and Lewis Korompilas (3-for-3) drove in 4 runs with a home run, double and a single as Glenbrook South improved to 5-1, 1-0 in the Central Suburban North. Andrew 10, Hillcrest 5–Winning pitcher Ron Prete (2-run single), George Gilbert (3 RBIs), Rick O`Neil (2-for-4, 3 RBIs) and Tom O`Neil (2-for-3, 1 RBI) led Andrew (7-3) to its sixth victory in the last seven games.
Maine South 18, Highland Park 2–Joe Mazukelli took over for starter Dave Malin (sore arm) and went 5 2/3 innings, scattering 4 hits and striking out 6. Gary Brighton paced the Hawks` 12-hit attack with 2 hits and 3 RBIs. Maine South improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Central Suburban North.
Niles North 10, Loyola 2–Winning pitcher Tony Tichy (2-for-4, 3 RBIs), John Youkhana (3-for-3, 5 RBIs), Rob Powers (2 hits), Charlie Vukovich (2 RBIs) and Mike Willens (2 hits) paced Niles North (6-3).
Leyden 6, St. Patrick 3–Tony Creco and Glenn Bemont each contributed a 2-run triple and Mike Becker was 2-for-3 to aid Doug Dubrock`s 5-hit, 6-strikeout pitching for Leyden (5-8).
Maine East 14, Glenbrook North 7–Jim Phillos and Dan Sullivan drove in four runs each and Brad Lietz had 3 RBIs to lead Maine East (6-3, 1-1) in a Central Suburban League South Division game. Dan McFeggan (2 hits, 2 RBIs)
went 5 1/3 innings to pick up the victory.
Lane Tech 3, Lake View 0–Brett Logerquiest`s 2-hit, 6-strikeout pitching paced Lane Tech to its third straight win in the Public League North Section. Sullivan 7, Mather 0–Junior righty Jim Robinson spaced two hits and struck out 10 and was 3-for-4 with a solo homer and 3 RBIs as Sullivan won its third straight in the North Section.
Marian Catholic 6, Marist 5–Unbeaten Marian won its eighth straight behind Tim Swanson (2 hits), Scott Baiker (2 hits, 1 RBI) and Rick Melendez (2 hits, 3 RBIs).
Juarez 8, Marshall 2–Jose Andrade (2-for-4, 2 RBIs) scattered 7 hits, struck out 12 and walked none and Antonio Alonso was 4-for-4 with 2 RBIs as Juarez (8-2, 3-0) remained unbeaten in the West Section.
Riverside-Brookfield 6, Nazareth Academy 4–Tony Nardi was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Mark Federmeyer had a two-run single for the winners in the nonconference game.
Ridgewood 7, Driscoll 4–Catcher Tom LaBeck led Ridgewood to the nonconference victory with a triple, double and two RBIs. The contest was shortened to five innings by darkness.
Lake Park 5, Elgin 2–Kevin Pleasant tripled and Mike Kissane, Dean Poulos and Randy Williams hit run-producing singles in the three-run fourth inning that carried Lake Park to victory in the Upstate Eight Conference.
