Tina and Tonya Lawson proved track is alive and well at Crete-Monee last Thursday. The Warriors won every running event they entered while running away with the South Inter-Conference Association South Division track title for the third consecutive year.

Tonya took the 100 low hurdles in a meet-record time of 14.2 seconds, finished second to teammates Sylvette Sawyers in the 300 lows and to Karen Holmes in the 200 meters, and ran on the winning 400-meter relay.

Tina took the 400 in 1:01.6 and led off the 1,600-meter relay.

Tonya and Tina lead the Warriors into the state qualifying meet Friday at Bloom High School.

”I`ve never seen two girls with as much enthusiasm as these two have,”

said coach Steve Currins. ”They`re well-liked, they`re good looking, they are talented athletically, they`re cheerleaders for the rest of the team.”

The first two years, the Lawsons ran in the shadow of Shelly McBride, now at Virginia. She won the Class AA 800 and 1,600 meters a year ago.

Last spring was a time of discovery for the sisters. Tina ran on the fourth-place 800-meter relay and sixth-place 1,600-meter relay at state.

Tonya discovered how good she could be in the state preliminaries.

”My time was the 12th-best in the 100-meter low hurdles and that gave me a goal to shoot for,” said Tonya.
