Gov. James Thompson announced Monday that $500,000 will go to the Chicago Department of Health to help pay start-up costs associated with a state initiative to reduce infant mortality.
The state dollars are to be used by the city department and community-based health and social service agencies to pay one-time costs incurred in taking actions intended to reduce the infant mortality rate in 19 Chicago communities.
