So Rita Hill is offended by Bishop Tutu saying, ”The West can go to hell.” She seems to forget that the bishop did not win his Nobel Prize for mincing words. On a personal level, he was conveying his exasperation at our President`s attitude as evidenced by his recent speech; as a theologian, he meant to warn the West of the consequences of condoning President Botha`s state of emergency.
Callous indifference to human suffering, thinly veiled in the guise of
”even-handedness,” is the message that Reagan and his speechwriters have delivered to Sowetho and Crossroads.
Mrs. Hill, instead of smugly tut-tutting Bishop Tutu`s choice of words, perhaps should educate herself about the conditions in South Africa which have made such a blunt statement necessary.
