I feel I must take exception to your editorial concerning mandatory seat belts. In it you state that this law serves a ”very good purpose: to induce people to take steps to protect themselves from avoidable injuries.”
I wonder if ”induce” is the proper word to be used here. Should I choose to drive my car the way I want to, without a seat belt and endangering no one but myself, I will receive a ticket for breaking the law. Should I decide not to pay that ticket, eventually a policeman will appear at my door with a gun strapped to his hip and, should I continue to attempt to live my life the way I want to, he will take me to jail. It would seem that the word ”force” would be more appropriate in this context.
