Polka dots and poufs: With the flirtatious mood bubbling over in summer party clothes, they`re a natural match.
Designers everywhere have been playing with polka-dot patterns in their spring and summer collections. From high-style Parisian Christian Lacroix and his bustled dresses for Jean Patou to Valentino`s flounced and feminine looks, the stylemakers prove that whimsical dots have found a perfect partner in summer`s lighthearted evening fashions.
The good news for those not interested in paying the haute designers`
out-of-this-world price tags is that the look has been interpreted in more down-to-earth prices on this side of the Atlantic. Victor Costa, who always seems to catch the latest trends at the top, has introduced dotted dresses starting at $250.
The one element these saucy evening dresses share is volume. Many of the best looks are either buoyed by crinolines or pouffed with a bubble or bustle for a fling with the `50s. Strapless bodices, from petal necklines to fitted bustiers, carry on the nostalgia.
Cotton and taffeta are the fabrics of choice for these summer dresses, and the polka dots pop in combinations ranging from loads of black and white to shocking neon brights.
The spirited look gets added fizz when mixed with the season`s key accessories: mesh gloves, the highest heels and bows, bows, bows–especially in the latest hot combo, dots and stripes. —
