The defacing of the Holocaust monument in Skokie–less than 24 hours after its dedication–makes one wonder what kind of creatures we have living among us on this Earth. The monument, of course, hurt no one; the survivors of the Holocaust, of course, hurt no one. Yet hate came to visit in Skokie once again, and all of us are deeply affected by this tragedy.
I am not a survivor of the Holocaust. I like to think that I am a civilized human being. The crime against civilization that took place in Skokie was done by human beings. But they clearly are not, by any stretch of the imagination, civilized.
