Second baseman Ryne Sandberg, on the disabled list with a severely sprained right ankle, is scheduled to have his cast removed Monday. ”I can`t feel anything right now,” Sandberg said. ”I`ll have the cast taken off Monday, and I`ll be able to join the team on the next trip. Once the cast is off, I`ll be able to rehabilitate.”
Scott Sanderson, who missed his start Friday because of a tender groin, will make his next appearance out of the bullpen, according to manager Gene Michael. ”We need help out there now because I took Dickie Noles out of there today to start,” Michael said. ”That`s seven innings out of the bullpen right there. Dickie can`t go for a couple of days now because of his start.” Cubs president Dallas Green said he detests the head-first slide. Shawon Dunston is lost for about six weeks because he broke a finger sliding into second base against the Phillies last week. ”I hate the head-first slide and I`ve always hated the head-first slide,” Green told WGN radio. ”I think you`ll find that type of injury cropping up from time to time because of it. The risk of injury is much greater there than with the basic slide.”
