Tom Seaver`s comeback with the New York Mets suffered another setback Saturday after he pitched four innings and allowed 10 hits during a simulated game at Shea Stadium. He threw 60 pitches, giving up four runs. ”There was no improvement at all,” Seaver said. ”I`m very disappointed, but I am not giving up yet.” Mets manager Davey Johnson said, ”I would like to see him pitch twice more before we make a decision.”
Seaver, who announced his attempted comeback in late May, originally gave a target date of June 20 for his return to the majors. In another simulated game Tuesday at Montreal, Seaver threw 88 pitches, allowing 13 hits. In his first appearance, an exhibition game against Tidewater, Seaver allowed seven runs and eight hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Right-hander Rick Aguilera, on the disabled list with a sore elbow, threw 51 pitches without pain in a simulated game. ”He had good pop on his pitches,” Johnson said. The Mets gave no estimate as to when Aguilera would return.
Charles Hudson, who opened the season with six victories, was optioned by the New York Yankees to their Columbus farm team of the Triple-A International League. The Yanks called up Bob Tewsksbury, who is scheduled to pitch Sunday. Hudson (7-2) pitched three innings of one-hit relief Friday to earn the victory in the Yankees` 10-5, 13-inning triumph over the Boston Red Sox. Before Friday, Hudson was winless since May 15 and surrendered 20 earned runs in his previous 21 innings.
A proposal to build an $80 million stadium for the San Francisco Giants has been presented to city officials, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The drawings, which weren`t released publicly, are so new ”the ink is still wet,” architect Donald Crosby said. The sketches, as described in the newspaper, call for a 42,000-seat stadium with old-time charm in the style of Wrigley Field or Boston`s Fenway Park, but with modern touches such as a state-of-the-art scoreboard. The city`s $30 million contribution would be raised by a bond issue.
The Philadelphia Phillies have placed outfielder Jeff Stone on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Tuesday, because of a bruised right hand. Outfielder Keith Hughes was recalled from Maine.
The Cleveland Indians have sent outfielder Doug Frobel to Buffalo and called up former White Sox outfielder Casey Parsons. Frobel had three hits, including a home run against the Sox, in 26 at-bats. Parsons, 33, was hitting .295 with 10 homers and 42 RBIs.
Milwaukee Brewer manager Tom Trebelhorn is going to have a chat with left-hander Ted Higuera. The message will be that Higuera will not have the opportunity to lose a 5-0 lead again.
”I`ll just have to approach things a little differently, I guess,”
Trebelhorn said after Higuera couldn`t hold a 5-0 lead Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays, who rallied to beat the Brewers 15-6. ”When it`s time (to make a change), it`s time. And if that makes people mad . . . It`s hard to complain about the offense we gave him, and we played good defense. It was time to hang tough.”
Higuera`s ERA over his last 11 starts is 6.08, and he is 1-6 over the same period.
