The Angels tied a major-league record Sunday when George Hendrick and Ruppert Jones each hit pinch home runs. It was the 34th time a team had hit two pinch homers in a single game.

Hendrick and Jones both batted in the No. 5 spot. Hendrick batted for starter Mark Ryal. Later, Jones hit for Hendrick. All three played left field. — In Ryal`s only at-bat, he slammed a deep liner to left that turned into an unusual left-to-short-to-third double play: Jack Howell was cut down trying to advance from second after Daryl Boston caught Ryal`s drive.

— Brian Downing`s first-inning home run marked the fourth time this season and the 14th time in his career that he led off his team`s first inning with a homer. . . . Wally Joyner enjoyed the fourth two-homer game of his two- year big-league career.

— Pitching matchups for the Sox-Oakland series: Monday, Curt Young (9-4, 3.37) versus Richard Dotson (4-5, 4.38); Tuesday, Jose Rijo (0-3, 4.78) versus Scott Nielsen (0-2, 5.52); Wednesday, Dave Stewart (9-7, 3.92) versus Jose DeLeon (5-7, 3.95).. . . Each night is a special promotion: half-price night on Monday, baseball cards on Tuesday (Jim Fregosi, Ozzie Guillen) and a sky concert and fireworks on Wednesday.

— It`s obvious that good pitching has sparked the Angels` current winning streak. Several hitters have been battling slumps that were extended Friday and Saturday by the decent pitching performances of the Sox`s DeLeon and Floyd Bannister. Downing went into Sunday`s game with a hitless string of 15 at-bats. Hendrick had gone 1-for-17, Jones 2-for-13, Howell 2-for-20, Mark McLemore 5-for-34, Gary Pettis 6-for-50 and Ryal 2-for-16. The combined averages for these seven players was .107 (16-for-149).

— On June 29, 1973, Richie Allen, the American League`s MVP the previous season, broke his leg during the Sox`s 2-0 loss to the Angels in Anaheim. Allen batted only five more times the rest of the season and the Sox, in first place at the time of the injury, finished fifth in the AL West.

— Minor-league note: Mike Yastrzemski, son of the ex-Red Sox star, hit two home runs, one with the bases loaded, in Triple-A Hawaii`s 16-7 loss to Phoenix Saturday.
