Right-hander Scott Sanderson hopes he will not have to miss his next start after leaving Monday night`s game in the fifth inning with a strained muscle in his right shoulder

”I`m tired of missing starts,” said Sanderson, who has been on the disabled list twice this season with a tender arm and groin pull.

Trainer John Fierro said he is not certain of Sanderson`s immediate availability. ”He should improve to the point where he can throw again. But five days may not be enough for a start,” said Fierro.

Interim manager Frank Lucchesi recalled that he once sent third-base coach John Vukovich down to the minors when he managed the light-hitting infielder in Philadelphia.

Lucchesi said he wished the Cubs were in a position to play more of their young players at the same time.

”I wish I could play every kid that we brought up,” he said. ”It would be beautiful. We`re in a tough situation. We want to catch the (fourth-place) Phillies, plus we`re playing the three contenders. I know that you get repercussions if you play all your kids at the same time.”

Rookie catcher Damon Berryhill, who started Tuesday night`s game against the Mets, said he plans to join teammate Manny Trillo in the Venezuelan winter league.
