The recent decision by the Advisory Committee on Physician
Recredentialing in New York State recommending the retesting of physicians is noteworthy. If the recommendations are adopted, the periodic re-examination of all physicians to maintain their licenses to practice will increase the quality of health care, reduce malpractice and bolster the public`s confidence in the health-care delivery system.
Illinois should follow New York State`s lead and investigate the feasibility of periodic retesting and recredentialing of all practitioners licensed under the Illinois Medical Practice Act.
