Somewhere out there, Duke Lamberts and Bob Hoyte and their teams are still heading for the finish line of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Of the 49 mushers who began the 1,168-mile race from Anchorage to Nome March 4, 36 had crossed the finish line by Sunday and 11 had dropped out. Only Lamberts and Bob Hoyte remain on the trail.
Joe Runyan won the race Wednesday, covering the route in 11 days and 5 1/ 2 hours.
Lamberts began the race with 17 huskies, but injuries and a virus have forced him to leave eight dogs with veterinarians at checkpoints along the route.
