Jeff Torborg has invited-no, make that ordered-his players to attend a 3 p.m. workout Saturday in the Metrodome.
It`s an effort to correct some of the glaring mental and physical errors plaguing the Sox. Torborg was especially frustrated after watching the Sox commit four errors in their 11-7 loss in Texas Thursday night-a game in which some Sox started to leave the field at one time with only two out.
”That`s happened three times,” Torborg said.
In his postgame interview he called the performace ”embarrassing.” He elaborated on Friday.
”That upsets me. We`ll go over our basic fundamentals (Saturday),” he said. ”If that doesn`t work, we`ll work on it again Monday, and if that doesn`t work, we`ll work on it again Tuesday.”
– Reliever Barry Jones is throwing well in the outfield as he recovers from arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow. Pitching coach Sammy Ellis said Jones will probably throw off a mound next week. No return date has been set.
”He`s coming along well,” Ellis said.
– Harold Baines isn`t talking to the press about his success this season. But that doesn`t bother Torborg, who praised Baines` quiet leadership.
”He`s quite a guy,” Torborg said. ”In his own quiet way, you can tell it hurts him when we lose.”
– Carlton Fisk had singles in his first three at-bats Friday night, one more hit than he`d managed in 23 trips since returning June 2 from a broken hand.
– Do the Twins miss slugger Kent Hrbek, out with a dislocated shoulder? They were 15-12 with him in the lineup and 11-20 without him after Friday night`s game.
