Japan will ban some ivory imports to help save African elephants, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry said Thursday.
The ban will apply to ivory-product and scrap imports, except cargoes shipped on or before June 18. Japan will also prohibit from June 19 most raw ivory imports.
Japan, the world`s biggest ivory importer, was responsible for 40 percent of ivory consumption in the world in the last three years.
