President Bush should realize that the Supreme Court is correct in defending our right to desecrate the flag. In order to promote the principles that our flag stands for, I have made a number of personal sacrifices, including service as a combat infantryman in a foreign war. I might casually refer to my efforts as ”defending the flag,” but one of the tenets I was defending was the right to burn the flag.

We view with disdain the recent massacre and arrests of symbolic protesters in China. We disapprove of a political system that fails to maintain a distance between symbolic protests and taking lives (or parts of lives via incarceration). To answer symbolic protests with anything stronger than a symbolic response is tyranny.

Our President should applaud the Supreme Court`s support of our sophisticated political environment in which we are above responding to symbolic dissent with prosecution.
