FANSTEEL INC. reported second-quarter net income dropped 17 percent, to $1.04 million, or 12 cents a share, from $1.25 million, or 15 cents a share, a year earlier. The North Chicago producer of metals and fabricated products said sales were unchanged at $50.4 million. First-half profits fell to $2.2 million, or 26 cents a share, from $2.8 million, or 33 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Sales rose to $102.2 million from $99.6 million.
