Police Supt. LeRoy Martin urged Chicago residents to call W-A-T-E-R-1-1

(928-3711) with complaints relating to open fire hydrants rather than the 911 emergency number.

Only emergency calls should go the 911 number, Martin said.

The city wants to keep the 911 lines open for emergencies so residents can get immediate help from police, paramedics or firefighters. The Chicago Water Department normally deals with open fire hydrants.
