The Nov. 13 Tribune reports that pro-abortion forces feel ”buoyed by . . . election victories in Virginia and New Jersey by gubernatorial candidates who support legalized abortion.” That is a misreading of the election results.
In New Jersey, Jim Courter did a 180-degree turn from the pro-life stand he had taken in the Republican primary-and lost the general election by a landslide. In Virginia, by contrast, Republican Marshall Coleman consistently maintained a pro-life position-and came within one-third of one percent of beating his heavily favored opponent.
These results indicate that principled support for the rights of the unborn is, if anything, a political asset.
