Rush
Presto (Atlantic) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
If we must endure another decade of arena rock, better to hear it played by a band like Rush rather than any number of poseurs with big hair and even bigger amplifiers. Blessedly bereft of sexist cliches and long-winded guitar solos, ”Presto” strives for something far more ennobling than the usual metal workout. Geddy Lee, once a shrieker as grating as Daffy Duck, is now a more relaxed and commanding vocalist. In addition, Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson have actually written some pop hooks (”Superconductor,” ”The Pass”) to go with their baroque arrangements, while drummer Neal Peart`s lyrics are always literate and sometimes insightful. Rush`s humorlessness remains a bit off-putting-it`d be nice to see what these talented fellas could do if they ever loosened up-but ”Presto” is a solid work: hard rock with a conscience.
