The decision of the Bush administraton to spend $500 million to rebuild the new United States Embassy in Moscow is outrageous and a totally irresponsible use of taxpayers` money.
The Tribune`s endorsement of this plan is dismaying.
The U.S. should refuse to allow the Soviets to use their new Washington embassy until they fully compensate the U.S. for damages in a sufficient amount to allow for our rebuilding of our Moscow embassy.
This paltry $500 million could be used to fund sorely needed programs for the poor and the elderly in housing, food and medical care.
Our government`s performance in these areas is a national disgrace, yet we seem to find vast sums of money for programs such as this giveaway in Moscow.
I have yet to hear any protest of this action from a member of Congress. But, after all, it is only $500 million.
