Lithuania`s struggle with the Soviet Union for independence forces the West to make a choice between Vytautas Landsbergis and Mikhail Gorbachev;
justice versus despotism; conscience against convenience.
Alex Vardamis, whose guest column ”Those impatient Lithuanian nationalists” appeared in your newspaper on April 3, made his decision. He chose Mikhail Gorbachev with the Russian colonial program over the newly established democracy in Lithuania.
I respect Mr. Vardamis` choice of convenience, but it should not be at the expense of someone else`s freedom. If George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and other American nationalists had been more patient, America might have remained a colony of the British Empire.
