The City Council of Calumet City has voted unanimously to deny Waste Management of North America Inc. permission to use 43 acres of the 400-acre CID landfill as a hazardous solid waste storage area. The site would have been used to store fuel-contaminated soils taken from areas surrounding underground storage tanks as well as soils from Superfund cleanup sites, said Mary T. Ryan, the firm`s community relations director.
”We can only go back now in light of the vote and look at our alternatives,” Ryan said. ”Litigation may be our only alternative.”
A cement-like material would be added to the fuel-contaminated soils in order to chemically bind the waste and render it ”as innocuous as possible,” Ryan said.
