– Let me know what happened to Richard Beymer, who was in ”West Side Story.” He hasn`t been heard from since he made that movie.-Mrs. G.G.

Beymer, 51, did several more important movies, ”The Longest Day” and

”Five Finger Exercise” among them. Then, after working on black voter registration in Mississippi during the 1960s, he filmed a TV documentary, seen later as part of the series ”Eyes on the Prize.” He continued to work as a cinematographer and film editor but returned to acting in the 1983 feature

”Cross Country.” Since then, he`s done TV guest roles, appeared in the series ”Paper Dolls” and is currently in the ABC series ”Twin Peaks.”

– Are River Phoenix, of ”Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” and Leaf Phoenix, of ”Space Camp,” related? Are those their real names?-L.V.

They`re brothers and those are their real names. They also have three younger sisters named Rainbow, Liberty and Summer. They`re the children of John and Arlyn Phoenix, professed flower children of the 1960s when such unusual names were the rage.

– What has happened to Lauritz Melchior, the actor?-B.G.

Melchior was one of opera`s great Wagnerian tenors from the 1920s to the 1940s and he sang in all the major opera houses of the world. He made a few movies in the late 1940s and `50s, including ”Thrill of a Romance,” ”Two Sisters from Boston,” ”This Time for Keeps,” ”Luxury Liner” and ”The Stars Are Singing.” He died at the age of 83 in 1973.
