Kudos to the League of Women Voters of Chicago and its president, Edna Pardo, for their stand against the preposterous notion that taxpayers should subsidize profit-making sports enterprises.

The beneficiaries of such largess must be snickering to themselves. They`re on a gravy train-fat television and radio contracts, booming gate receipts, and now public funds as well.

In the wake of subsidized stadium construction, the tax man brings bad news. Case in point: Rockford, which invested $2 million in minor league baseball, now seeks a tax rate increase to support its park system.

The slick dealing of the fun-and-games lobby is working to the disadvantage of more pressing needs.
