Donald Trump`s Taj Mahal Casino Resort won about 5 percent less money from players in June than in May, falling far below the figure needed for the casino to break even.

The Taj won $34.75 million in June, down from $36.53 million in May, according to data the casinos exchange at each month`s end. The decline was 4.9 percent, compared with a decline among other Atlantic City casinos of 1.5 percent.

The Taj, which opened in April, continued to turn in a strong performance at its 167 table games, but its 3,009 slot machines lagged badly.

For all the city`s 12 casinos, the amount of money lost by players-and, thus, won by casinos-slipped 2 percent, to $258.7 million in June from $263.9 million in May. Excluding the Taj, the casinos won $4.4 million less in June this year than in June 1989, a 1.8 percent decline.

Trump casino executives declined to comment on the results. Insiders have said Trump`s business plan calls for the Taj to win $1.3 million per day, but in the summer months, the high season here, Trump must win more than $1.5 million per day to compensate for the slow volume of gaming in winter months. Last month, the Taj won $1.16 million per day. Trump`s two other Atlantic City casinos, the Trump Castle and Trump Plaza, also had declines, but in line with the nine other casinos.
